PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH AT MELBOURNE

The Presbyterian inhabitants of Melbourne, Port Phillip, have addressed the following Appeal to the inhabitants of Van Diemen's Land, for aid in the erection of a Church, in connexion with the Church of Scotland, and under the superintendence of the Presbytery of New South Wales.

"Melbourne, Port Phillip,
6th February, 1838"

"It is proposed to erect a Presbyterian Church, in connexion with the Church of Scotland, at Melbourne, Port Phillip. The large and rapidly increasing population of this town and the surrounding district, of whom a considerable number are of Scottish origin, renders it requisite that some provision should be made for securing to them and to their children the benefits of religious instruction, and the privilege of uniting the public worship of God, according to the hallowed institutions of their forefathers. The people have already subscribed upwards of £230, but before any assistance can be obtained from the Colonial Treasury, it is necessary that at least £300 be raised by private contribution. If the means could be obtained, it is desirable that a Church, a (temporary) School-house, and a Minister's dwelling should be erected, but the former is most urgently required, and ought, if possible, to be immediately proceeded with.

An Appeal is therefore made to the members of the Church of Scotland, and the friends of religion generally, for aid towards the accomplishment of so desirable and important an object: and as many of these, resident in Van Diemen's Land, have flocks and herds at Port Phillip, it is earnestly hoped that this appeal will not be in vain. The Rev. James Clow has kindly undertaken the duties of Treasurer, and the Rev. James Forbes the Officiating Minister, and Mr. Skene Craig have been appointed Secretaries.

(Signed) JAMES FORBES

In consequence of this appeal, a Subscription has been entered into for the purpose specified.

Subscriptions will be received at all the Banks in Hobart Town and Launceston, and by Members of Committee of the Church of Scotland Society, over the Island, and transmitted through the Treasurer of the Society to the Committee at Melbourne.
